The Onion - which runs some great classical music stories - has a fabulous idea for orchestras to become a bit more relevant: open mic nights. A great idea that Aussie orchestras should definately get into - The Queensland Orchestra would draw a huge crowd of blokes to see their mates have a go at the solo parts in a Vivaldi or Mozart concerto...

A Brisbanite born and bred, flautist Timothy Munro studied at the University of Queensland before abandoning the sunshine to do an Artist Diploma course amidst the flat cornfields of Northern Ohio, USA, at Oberlin College. Tim has performed as soloist and section player with many professional Australian orchestras and chamber ensembles. A passionate advocate for contemporary music, he has worked with composers including Elliott Carter, Oliver Knussen, Aaron Jay Kernis, and Brett Dean. I'd pay some good money to go see you singing some Paul Anka-style diddies with an orchestra. It'd be best if we could throw fruit at you too.
